It is very painful to lose a parent, just like what happened to me recently. In anime, of course, this is not a new thing and we all know that when anime characters lose a loved one in general, it can become the reason they become depressed and give up or it can be the start of a wonderful development.

In this article, I am going to list five anime where our protagonists are separated from at least one parent, which then becomes one of the main reasons for the entire plot to take place. Let's get started!

For the first one, let's go for an anime with a character most of you probably already have seen at least once, Noel. Of course, we're not going to talk about her, but instead Nonoka Komiya, the main character of this series. In the city of Kiriya, Nonoka and her friends—Koharu, Shione, Yuzuki, and Souta—attempted to summon a flying saucer so that their wishes could be granted. Sadly, Nonoka had to move to Tokyo so that she could be with her mother for her mother's treatment. What's even sadder is after seven years, Nonoka's mother succumbed to her illnesses, and as a part of moving on, Nonoka, alongside her father, moved back to Kiriya.

What I really love about this kind of anime is that it never fails to show us that even when a person is already dead, their influence will never truly die!

Let's go for something a little bit old. All of a sudden for some reason, the mother of Yuzuyu Sakashita left Yuzuyu outside the house of her sister and Yuzuyu's aunt—Misako Katakura. Because of this, the whole Katakura family goes into discussion as to how to take care of Yuzuyu, and the verdict is that Kippei, a high school kid popular with the girls, will act as Yuzuyu's main guardian of some sort.

As the anime progresses you will begin to see how Yuzuyu struggles to cope up with having no mother, especially that the separation happened abruptly and that she is still a child and perhaps do not yet fully understand how deep her situation really is. But, it is also good to think that a man like Kippei, who most people would probably think of as irresponsible, slowly becomes more responsible the more time he spends with his young cousi

3. Kotoura-san

Haruka Kotoura, the anime's titular character, has been treated as some sort of outcast since she was a child. This is because of her mind-reading ability, which also resulted in the separation of both her parents and ultimately, she was left alone with her grandfather. Sadly, this was just the start of her very depressing days. But when Kotoura transfers into a new school, she meets Yoshihisa Manabe, who, even after knowing about her mind-reading capabilities, willingly became her friend and that's the beginning of a friendship that changes Kotoura's world forever.

Although the first ten minutes of this anime shows a dark and depressing environment, it is not mostly the case for the rest of the anime as it's super lighthearted. Sure, there will be drama waiting for those who watch this anime, but, there is also something very, very good at the end that I believe is worth seeing. I hope you'll all be able to see it for yourselves—as long as you can survive a little bit of ecchi that doesn't really ruin the show.

When Hime Gotou's mom died, her father, Kakushi Gotou (pun intended) is now taking care of her alone. They seem to be living quite happily. However, Kakushi is a manga author who draws a manga that is quite questionable—and he's quite popular for it. He doesn't want his daughter to know about his job so he does everything he can to hide it from her. Despite this, Kakushi is still a very good father to Hime and will also do anything to make her happy.

The anime is very funny, sometimes weird, but always wholesome. But as stated in its synopsis, "there are no secrets that time cannot reveal." In time, Hime must learn the reality behind the things she took for granted as she grew up. But of course, we will get to see the life of this father-daughter's duo and the situations that they encounter and through those, their already amazing relationship will grow into an even better one.

Honorable: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
[Your Lie in April]

Before I continue, here's an honorable mention. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso or Your Lie in April. But Alex, why is the most popular anime in this video only an honorable mention? Well, it is already popular and people should have at least heard of this anime as of now. In the off chance that you didn't, the story is about a prodigious pianist named Kousei Arima, who finds himself unable to continue playing after the tragic death of his mother. However, when he meets a girl named Kaori Miyazono, his world begins to change once more.

Last, but frankly the best entry in this video in my opinion. This is the one anime that I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone of all ages. Even if you ignore every anime I just said earlier, this one is a must-watch. The story of this anime is about the sisters Kyou, 15, and Asu, 9. Without the presence of their mother who passed away and their father who went missing due to gambling debt, they are now living by themselves. To pay for tuition, rent, and necessities, Kyou strives to juggle various part-time jobs.

Life is very hard for them, but they are not alone. Blessed with good and kind people around them, they are not miserable. But above all else, whatever pain, afflictions, tribulations, or quarrels that may come their way, at the end of the day, they are still sisters, and that bond will never be broken. It's a very, very wonderful anime.
